"Everyone has the power for greatness, not for fame, but greatness, because greatness is determined by service."
do you agree that everyone has the potential for greatness? maybe you think serving others isn't what makes someone great; if that's the case, what do you think are the qualifying features of greatness?
When Martin Luther King Jr. said the above quote, he stated that he believed everybody has the power for greatness, and greatness means what you do for others; that the amount of help you give to others determines how great you are. Personally, while I understand what MLK Jr. was getting at, I disagree. I think one of the best things about greatness is that not everyone is great, and not everyone is destined for greatness. Some are meant to achieve greatness while others are destined for an average life that recognizes others' greatness. Without people to admire, what would the point of achieving above be? There must be a norm that certain people can rise above. If everyone made discoveries like the light bulb, would we be praising Thomas Edison? If all people stood up for themselves against biased systems, would we look to Rosa Parks for inspiration? To achieve true greatness, you have to benefit others, sure. But benefiting yourself doesn't hurt either. To be great, you have to benefit society, but you have to also remember that others who are not great are the reason why you are the epitome of greatness. You have to be made for greatness, and maybe, you just don't have the potential.
